Share: the county's share of the 2024 statewide vote. 2024: the Harris–Trump margin there. To tie: what the Democratic side needs there for an even state, from our forecast's county pattern. Bellwether: the county nearest the state's 2024 margin. Swing: the biggest move from 2020 to 2024. In by: when the county had passed 90% of its final count in 2024: an hour of election night (ET), a later day (Wed, Thu, Fri, Nov 11, Nov 15), later (after Nov 15) or n/a (the feed had no data). Early, late (where sourced): in 2024, early means the county was 90% in by 9 PM ET and late means it was not yet 90% in at 11 PM ET; both come from the same table as In by. Count by hour: the share of the state's final count in at each hour in 2024; Wed 9 PM, Fri 9 AM and Nov 15 use the last archived copy before that time. 2024 was a presidential year: 2026 can differ. Write the real margin in the box once a county is fully counted.
Sources: 2024 presidential results by county and by House district; poll closing times from state election offices; legislatures and measures from Ballotpedia; count order mainly from AP and MIT; the count by hour, when counties were in, and which counties reported early or late in 2024 from archived copies of AP's count, and news reports for Wisconsin and Nebraska. Election Night GuideNov. 3, 2026 · page 9 of 10
How to read the night
A count is the order the precincts report, not the result. Three things to check before you trust a lead.
1. A count is not a lead
A candidate who trails by L points with a share c of the vote counted needs the rest of the vote to favor them by L × c ÷ (1 − c) points. The more is counted, the harder the catch-up: with half in, the rest must swing as far as the gap; with nine in ten in, nine times as far.So ask which votes are left (which counties, mail or Election Day) before you read a trend. The county tables show where they are.
CountedThe rest must favor the trailer by
25%0.33 × the gap
50%1 × the gap
75%3 × the gap
90%9 × the gap
2. Which votes come first, and which come last
How fast each state counted, hour by hour in 2024, is on the next page. What AP and MIT reported about earlier elections (2020 and 2022, as dated; sources on the web page):Later votes leaned, the last time
DemocraticMichigan (2020), Wisconsin (2020), Nevada (2022)
RepublicanGeorgia (2022), North Carolina (2022), Ohio (2022), Florida
Counted lateRhode Island (mail counted late); Michigan (mail counted late; big cities report late); Wisconsin (mail counted late; big cities report late); Nevada (mail counted late; big cities report late); Oregon (mail counted late); Alaska (mail counted late)
3. Rules that can change the night
Georgia
A candidate needs more than half the vote (50 percent plus one). Otherwise the top two finishers go to a runoff on December 1, 2026.Source: Georgia.gov: Election Day, General Election Runoff; Georgia.gov: Vote in Runoff Elections. Read 2026-10-31.
Maine
Election night shows first choices only. If no candidate has more than 50% of them, ranked-choice rounds are run later in Augusta; the state says a statewide tabulation can take about 1.5 to 2 weeks. Official results come up to 20 days after the election.Source: Maine Secretary of State: How does the RCV tabulation process work?; Maine Secretary of State: Ranked Choice Voting Resources (updated Oct. 6, 2026). Read 2026-10-31.
Florida
If unofficial returns show a candidate or a measure losing by one-half of one percent or less, a recount is ordered (the candidate may ask in writing that it not be made).Source: 2026 Florida Statutes, s. 102.141(7). Read 2026-10-31.
To tie is each county's expected margin if the state ends exactly even, taken from the county-by-county pattern in our own forecast and weighted by 2024 turnout; where we have no pattern for a race, the table says it moves every county by the same amount instead. Real counties will not hit them exactly: use them to see which counties matter, and by roughly how much. Links to every source: callthemap.com/election-night-guide.

How fast each state counts
How much of each state's final presidential count was in at each hour of election night 2024. Fastest first, by the hour each state passed 90%.From AP's count as archived (sources on the web page). Bold: 90% or more. n/a: no reliable figure (AP's feed had no data for a large county overnight). –: no archived copy for that time. 2024 was a presidential year with more early and mail voting than a midterm, so 2026 can differ. Wed 9 PM, Fri 9 AM and Nov 15 use the last archived copy before that time, so a share may be a little higher by then. Each figure is a share of the state's own final count, not a vote total.

County targets
2024 presidential results by county (3,112 counties in the site’s county files, whose state sums match the FEC’s official totals), and the county pattern in our forecast’s precinct file. To tie is each county's expected margin if the state ends exactly even, taken from the county-by-county pattern in our own forecast and weighted by 2024 turnout; where we have no pattern for a race, the table says it moves every county by the same amount instead. 19 of the 19 county tables use the forecast pattern; where a state has a Senate and a governor race, the Senate race sets the column and the governor race's pattern differs from it by up to 4 points in the printed counties. Alaska reports by state House district, so it has no county table: 19 of 20 states have one.
House lean
The 2024 presidential result on the 2026 district lines (Dave’s Redistricting, The Downballot, Texas Legislative Council).
Races
Every race we rate Toss-up, Tilt or Lean for the Senate, governor and the House, plus, as early signals, the races we rate Likely in states whose first polls close by 7:30 PM ET. “Our forecast” is Call the Map’s edition ctm-2.2-20261031-f17cb06f835b, as of October 31, 2026.
Poll closing
State election offices and statutes.
Legislatures, measures
Ballotpedia, checked against NCSL; Ballotpedia’s 2026 measures. We forecast neither.
Rules that decide a race
Georgia: Georgia.gov: Election Day, General Election Runoff (read October 31, 2026); Georgia: Georgia.gov: Vote in Runoff Elections (read October 31, 2026); Maine: Maine Secretary of State: How does the RCV tabulation process work? (read October 31, 2026); Maine: Maine Secretary of State: Ranked Choice Voting Resources (updated Oct. 6, 2026) (read October 31, 2026); Florida: 2026 Florida Statutes, s. 102.141(7) (read October 31, 2026).
Early and late counties
The early and late tags and the “Count order (2024)” lines describe the 2024 election night only, and say nothing about 2026. They are read from the same AP count as the count by hour and the “In by” column (see Count timing), so they cannot disagree with them. Early: the county was 90% counted by 9 PM ET. Late: not yet 90% counted at 11 PM ET. Times are Eastern and are the hours of the archived copies, so a county’s time can be up to an hour later than the moment it passed 90%. For Wisconsin and Nebraska the lines come from dated news reports, listed here, and a county is tagged late only where the AP count agrees.
Count timing
The “Count by hour” strips, the “In by” column and the table on the last pages describe the 2024 presidential count only and are a guide to 2026, not a promise: 2024 was a presidential year with more early and mail voting than a midterm, so times can differ. The figures are the AP count behind the New York Times results feed, read from copies the Internet Archive took during and after the night (Eastern time). Each figure is the share of that state’s or county’s own final count already in at the latest copy at or before the hour; the final count is the feed’s last count (the certified totals for some states, named in the data file), not a vote total. “In by” is the first hour a county had passed 90% of its final count; Wed, Thu and Fri use the last copy before that morning or evening. Copies are a minute or two apart and some hours have no copy within an hour: those figures are left out, not filled in. Minnesota’s and Iowa’s statewide totals overnight, and Anoka County MN and Story County IA, are marked n/a: the feed had no data for them until the next day. Virginia’s shares run 2 to 5 points high against the state’s own totals. A copy's address is https://web.archive.org/web/<time>id_/<feed>. Where exact is false the time is given to the minute and the address resolves to the copy nearest that minute.
